The Institut has been providing training for doulas since 2008. The courses can be proposed in different towns in France as long as the learning group is large enough. Until today there have been courses in Bordeaux, Marseille, Montpellier, NÎmes, Lyon, Paris, Rennes and Toulouse. The trainees are required to complete a 27 day course (12 modules) spread over a 12 month period. The course validates the Core Curriculum of the Association Doulas de France. On the last module of the course trainees are asked to present a “end of course project” to a panel including members of the Institute staff, birth and perinatal associations guests, parents who had a doula… A self evaluation document filled in by the trainee will be discussed with the trainers during an individual meeting.
The course or part of the course is also open to any professional wanting to cover topics they feel they need to compliment their activities. Trainees are limited to 15 per group and the Institut provides the opportunity for participants to return and re-train in any 12 of the course modules, free of charge.
The course has been elaborated and taught by experienced doulas who also have solid pedagogy and teaching backgrounds in the childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting, womanhood fields. Outside speakers can be called upon to inform trainees on other associations that can support parents (Postnatal depression, Perinatal loss, Maternity Users Rights …).
The Institut proposes a Winter University for doulas since 2011. It offers workshops, moments of exchange and recreation. Future projects will include other workshops and the establishment of regional meetings on a regular basis.
