This doula training programme is ubicated in Málaga, in the south of Spain, since 1999. Our main mission is to support women on their way to becoming a Doula with the focus they attain and keep an attitude of giving and feeling as companions in the stages of maternity/paternity, perinatal grief and carnatic singing. The Doulas that complete the training provide a service to those women who request it, by accompanying them in their home or hospital.
The training coordinator and the various speakers represent different attitudes towards maternity and paternity. We complement each other to provide a better and more complete concept about a Doula’s role. A Doula’s support also means to achieve a better understanding of the pregnant woman and her family, providing her with guidance to achieve independence and a better knowledge of herself. Every process of a mother/woman and her baby shall continue in natural well-being.
We hold meetings once a month all year round, in which the Doulas in training and the Doulas with Diplomas meet and can contribute both their intuition and their knowledge acquired during the training and in the course of their personal growth. Up to this moment, 78 women have completed our training and many of them are accompanying pregnant women with unconditional love and up to date information. We know that being a Doula represents evolution. Every one of our trainings includes a new awakening by attaining an intimate understanding of the stages of maternity; learning how to support and inform; how to protect the emotional bond with the new child; and recognising that, together, we are creating a new Culture of Birth. A Doula must have a healthy dose of “emotional art”, and her role as a companion also means she must portray this new awareness about childbirth-culture.
