Founded in 2008, DOUM is one of Turkey’s first childbirth preparation centers. With only a couple of local doulas when we started out, we are now thrilled to see the number of doulas, birth activist and centers grow across the country. We have been hosting a number of doula trainings, advanced courses and international trainers over the years.
Although there is no formal doula association in Turkey yet, doulas in the country keep in touch and cooperate through various channels. Many of us are members of Dogana (Birthing Women’s Rights Association) and work together under that roof.
Starting from 2015 DOUM is offering the DOUM Doula course. We believe strongly that pregnancy, birth and the first few years of life are critical in shaping our personalities, health and psychology in the coming years. Having witnessed the impact doulas can have on women and babies having more positive experiences through these critical stages, we aim to train doulas who can support families with compassion. We place a strong emphasis on preparing doulas to navigate the challenges of our local birthing environment.
The topics we cover include but are not limited to:
-The physiology of labour and birth
-Mental and spritiutal aspects of labour and birth
-Practical labour support techniques
-Welcoming the baby
-Becoming a professional doula
The training also introduces various paths for personal development such as meditation, yoga, art, etc. and supports students on their personal journey. We believe that we become better doulas by working on our own issues and taking good care of ourselves.
The course includes 108 hours of training and a 3 day retreat over a 7 month period. Students are required to attend at least 5 births prior to graduation.
